Kleine pg. 22

Summary

In Michael Kleine’s article “What Is It We Do When We Write Articles Like This One- and How Can We Get Students to Join Us?”, Kleine attempts to tell his audience how to properly write a paper and the correct process to follow to make your paper the best it can be. He does this by giving the audience helpful procedures to follow. Kleine argues that writing a research paper is more than just copying and taking information from one source and putting it directly into a paper with out truly understanding it. Kleine explains that a research paper has a long procedure to it and should be well developed.

Synthesis

Kleine's article is very similar to the article Greene wrote. Kleine talks about how to properly write a research paper and Greene talks about framing an argument. They both give their audience ways to better their papers and procedures to follow to become a more complex writer.

Before you read

After looking through my syllabi for courses this semester, almost all of my courses require a researched writing. Right now, I imagine looking on the internet for research and using the library. To accomplish the projects I will need to have a main focus for the paper and frame my idea. Once I have done that I will make sure I have a good argument that I can support with factual information and not just opinions.

Questions for Discussion

1. What Kleine is explaining to his audience lines up with what I was taught. At first I didn't know how to write a research paper, but during high school my english teacher taught me mostly all the procedures to follow that Kleine was explaining in his article.

3. Sources play an immense role in the research of Kleine. In my past research efforts sources used to be just copying the research I found and not evaluating or really analyzing it. I learned that this is the wrong way to write a research paper and was able to resolve my mistakes for the next time I would have to write a paper again.

4. I would change how I analyze, evaluate, and synthesize my research. I will start to follow the procedures Kleine talks about in his article so that I can become a better writer.

Thoughts

After reading Kleine's article I found it to be extremely helpful because it gave his readers a lot of advice on how to better your writing. I found it fascinating to read and will definitely use his procedures and rules he provided next time I write a research paper.

Summaries and Synthesis

Summary

Greene has a conversation with the readers in his article and tells his audience that framing is very important in forming an argument. He also explain how to develop a proper argument and talks about asking questions, having a clear idea, and research is very important.

Synthesis

In both readings they are very similar because they both give the readers steps to follow and rules for writing and forming ideas.

Questions for Discussion and Journaling and Applying and Exploring Ideas

2.       I believe that Greene quotes Burke again to give us a clear understanding of how arguments can have many different views and disagreements. The passage also is used as a great example of how arguments occur in our everyday lives and how their are different sides to each argument. Also, it shows how arguments are never really settled and can be debated upon for a long time. We may never agree on the views people may have on a certain subject, but we can learn form these arguments to better understand the views of other people and how to partake in an argument.

3.       Framing can be used to help form and strengthen your thoughts and views when on an argument.  Framing also helps to figure out whether or not the facts in the argument are accurate or just someone opinion they are trying to force upon you. The metaphor framing underlines is to focus on what the person is trying to convey and better understand it. This concept is important to Greene because he uses it to strengthen his thoughts and to get his point across in an argument.

2.      Greene's article represents a conversation between him and the reader. In his article he is teaching us how to better our arguments by using tools he has given us in the reading. By using these tools it will help strengthen our argument and form our thoughts. Greene definitely practices what he preaches because he can support his views with different facts and he gives the reader advice to achieve a successful argument.

                                                                       Thoughts

After reading each of the assigned readings I learned a lot about arguments and how to form and frame a good one. I found the readings to be interesting and they taught me a lot of things that I did not know about arguments. Also the readings taught me be knowledgeable about the argument and be able to support your argument with facts and not just opinions.

Before You Read

The term argument can have various meanings. I would define argument as a disagreement or a conversation that has different points of views. In everyday conversation some people may define it as a dispute or competition to prove that their side of the argument is correct, which usually always turns into a fight. In an academic setting this word has a different meaning. An argument in an academic setting is usually used as a lesson to learn how people have different opinions, learn about their views, and how to keep an open mind on different controversial topics.
